The flagship smartphone of the Finnish mobile giant, Nokia, the N8 was the first smartphone to run on Symbian^3 mobile operating system. Launched in 2010, it broke company record for having the most pre-orders, with sales of as many as 4 million units during the first three months upon its release.

When it was introduced in the market, Filipinos were definitely impressed with its classy and sleek design. Of course, the new operating system and the 12.1MP camera were also impressive and attracted more customer attention. The price tag was also quite affordable which endeared it more to the practical buyers.

The Nokia N8 features a 3.5 inch AMOLED capacitive multipoint touch display with Brightness Control, Low Power Mode, Low Power Mode and Orientation Sensor. It comes with several sensors including Magnetometer, Ambient Light Sensor, Accelerometer and Proximity Sensor. The resolution is 640 X 360 pixels.

It runs on Nokia Belle Symbian OS and powered 680MHz single core processor with 256MB RAM and 16GB mass memory expandable up to 32GB via micro SCD card slot. The device is designed for comfort and convenience with dedicated hardware keys that include a Power Key, Menu Key, Lock Key, Volume Keys, and a Camera Key. It fits nicely in your hand and boasts of a nice finish. It also comes with a 1200 mAh battery and connects to HSDPA and Quad Band GSM networks as well as WiFi and Bluetooth.

The smartphone has a primary 12MP camera with Xenon flash, and auto focus with two stage capture key as well as 2x digital zoom, ZEISS optics, exposure compensation, face recognition, full screen viewfinder, still image editor and geotagging. Image capturing is possible with many options for colour tones, scene and white balance. There is also a VGA front camera capable of video recording and video call.

This smartphone is capable of shooting 720p video and zooming to 3x. It has several video white balance modes including Cloudy, Fluorescent, Incandescent, Automatic and Daylight. The N8 comes built in music applications including Nokia Music with audio features that include Music Player, Audio Equalizer, Audio Streaming, Stereo Widening and Loudness. It is capable of audio/voice recording and supports many file formats.

In terms of productivity features, the N8 comes with Calculator, Calendar, Clock, Digital Clock, Notes, and a To Do List. For the business folks, there are several apps you would find useful including Excel, Word, PDF and PowerPoint.

Synchronize data via Exchange ActiveSync, Remote SyncML, Local SyncML and iSync. Email and messaging is accomplished via several email solutions including Nokia, Hotmail and Yahoo Mail. You can view and edit email attachments as well.

The Nokia N8 boasts of a couple of GPS and Navigation features and services including Nokia Maps. Users can utilise the free global voice guided turn-by-turn drive navigation.

The Nokia N8 offers plenty of reason for you to buy it. It has great camera, clear screen, superb battery life and decent audio output. Plus, you cannot ignore the fact that it comes with a stylish aluminium casing.


Some users were not impressed with the average quality virtual keyboards and poor social network configuration. There was also some confusion in the connection management and internet experience was a tad unimpressive.


During its launch, the Nokia N8 became the company’s best phone, thanks to industry leading functionality. It is a good smartphone and reasonably priced at that if you do not have the budget for the high end ones.
