This page was written as a crash-course on installing and using custom made maps with Mapsource and on Garmin GPS-recievers. It is primarily intended as a manual to my Morocco-Topo map but can also be applied elsewhere. Note that MapSource and various other things mentioned on this page are registered trademarks and belong to their respective owners. PC/Laptop and Garmin GPS reciever Install Garmin MapSource on the PC: Also some drivers for the GPS-reciever are necessary. The drivers and program should have been shipped on the CD with any Garmin GPS receiver. They are also included in the various commercial map products offered by Garmin. Install the custom map on the PC: Good custom maps come as an self-installing .exe. That should do everything you need. Don't read on, but continue with the next step. Sometimes you only get an .zip having an .reg-file included. In that case, open the .reg-file with an text-editor (e.g. Notepad), change the paths written in there to the paths you want to keep the installed map, and then double-click the .reg-file to "merge" it into the Windows registry. Also try the program regedit, but in any case be sure you know, what you are doing! Select the Product within MapSource: Start MapSource and "Select the (Map-)Product". This allows to choose, which maps you are working with in MapSource. This step is also illustrated below. Select Map-Tiles : Typically a map-product covering a whole country is split up into a set of tiles, each covering a small region only. Use the "Select Maps"-tool of MapSource to click or drag on map-tiles you want to transfer to your GPS reciever (illustrated below). Also on the sidebar, where usually the tracks, routes and waypoints appear, you can have a look at the selected map tiles and their sizes. Send to GPS: Just click on the corresponding button in MapSource and see what is happening next. Of course you have to plug in your GPS reciever (e.g. via USB) and turn it on to have any success with this button. PC/Laptop without Garmin GPS reciever Download and install nRoute : This program should be available at the Garmin-Homepage under "Support" -> "Downloads" -> "Mapping Software". It should work out of the box. Install the custom map: Get the self-installing .exe and install the map. Also see the corresponding point above. Select the Product within nRoute: Start nRoute and "Select the (Map-)Product". This allows to choose, which maps you are working with in nRooute. PDA/Mobile Phone with GPS reciever Download and Install Garmin XT for the PDA/Mobile Phone: Garmin XT should be available for various platforms (S60, Symbian, Windows Mobile...) at the Garmin homepage under "Support" -> "Downloads" -> "Additional Software" -> "Garmin Mobile". For installation, you typically have to connect to your PDA/Mobile Phone in plain, simple "Data Transfer" mode. Install Garmin MapSource on the PC: The program should have been shipped with Garmin XT, otherwise try the Garmin homepage. Transfer the Map: Connect to your PDA/Mobile Phone in plain, simple "Data Transfer" mode. The unit should now appear within MapSource, as soon as you enter one of the transfer menus. For further details, also see "PC/Laptop and Garmin GPS reciever" further up on this page. Note: For some unknown reason, the names are currently not displayed correctly within Garmin XT (at least on my mobile phone). Linux All of this was tested or reported to work with the following GPS recievers:

Nokia 808 PureView: introduction The Nokia 808 PureView exists because smartphones have made compact cameras all but obsolete. A 41Mp camera strapped to a dated Symbian smartphone, the Nokia 808 PureView is a strange mix of awesome and awful, probably best viewed as a compact camera with low-end smartphone functions attached. (It's like when I had a £300 satnav and a £200 car. But I never bundled them together and sold them as an expensive car.) There's nothing wrong with Symbian, of course, but it is on its way to the grave which means the relative lack of apps is unlikely to improve, and you shouldn't expect any OS updates. And next to iOS, Windows Phone and Android, Symbian looks what it is: outmoded. Which means that those looking to shell out £500 for a smartphone should look elsewhere. This is a phone for people in the market for a camera. Albeit those who are prepared to shell out £500 for a compact camera. You can't buy the Nokia 808 PureView on contract, right now. Compared with other cameras the Nokia 808 PureView has an intuitive interface, compared with other high-price smartphones... not so much. The multiple home pages resemble older iterations of Android, as does the series of app icons along the bottom of the screen. But unless you are a Symbian fan - and we're sure you exist - this is a smartphone hamstrung by a less than polished OS. We don't know whether Nokia is planning a Windows Phone version of the 808 PureView, but that could be the phone to wait for if you are desparate for a cameraphone that is more camera than phone. Nokia 808 PureView: the OS The Symbian Belle OS utilised by the Nokia 808 PureView will be a pleasant surprise for anybody who hasn't used Symbian for a while. (Or, to put it another way, everyone.) It looks dated, but it is a perfectly functional and responsive touchscreen operating system. The lack of apps is made up for by the fact that most major functions are catered for out of the box: functional web browser, social app, QuickOffice and so on. One thing we did like about the Nokia 808 PureView was the way you can manage if from your PC. Without installing any applications you can simply drag and drop to add and remove media. It's totally straightforward, which is more than can be said for some manufacturers' synching systems. There's a built-in FM radio, as well as Nokia Drive for getting around. And because Symbian is a lightweight OS, the relatively low-spec hardware isn't a problem. On which note... Nokia 808 PureView: hardware and build The Nokia 808 PureView is chunky and built to last. The lens and flash are recessed and protected by a lozenge of shiny metal. This is a heavy phone, at 169g. It's not an unpleasant weight, and it makes the Nokia 808 PureView feel pretty indestructable, but you'll feel it after a lengthy photo session. The PureView is naturally weighted toward the side with the lens in it, but not outrageously so. In fact, credit where it is due, it's fairly well balanced, and the weight makes it easier to hold steady. The finish of the back and sides of the PureView is a little plasticky, but it is easy to maintain a grip.

HELSINKI: HMD Global, the Finnish company that owns the rights to use Nokia's brand on mobile phones, announced on Sunday its first smartphone, targeted for Chinese users with a price of 1, 699 yuan ($246). "The decision by HMD to launch its first Android smartphone into China is a reflection of the desire to meet the real world needs of consumers in different markets around the world... it is a strategically important market, " HMD said in a statement. Nokia was once the world's dominant cellphone maker but missed the shift to smartphones, and then chose Microsoft's Windows operating system for its "Lumia" range. After the 2014 deal, Microsoft continued selling cheaper basic phones under Nokia's name and Lumia smartphones under its own name, but last year, it largely abandoned both businesses. HMD in December took over the Nokia feature phones business and struck a licensing deal that gave it sole use of the Nokia brand on all phones and tablets for the next decade. It will pay Nokia royalties for the brand and patents, but Nokia has no direct investment in HMD. Nokia Oyj is currently focused on telecom network equipment business and technology patents. HMD CEO Arto Nummela, who was once responsible for Nokia's sales and product development, told Reuters last month that HMD aims to be one of the key competitive players in the smartphone business where it faces tough competition from Apple, Samsung and dozens of other players.

As an industry leader in 5G, Nokia actively participated in the writing of the first comprehensive and consolidated book on the subject entitled: “5G Mobile and Wireless Communications Technology”. It was co-edited and shaped by 10 co-authors from Nokia Bell Labs, with contributions by more than 50 industry experts on 5G. The book covers everything from the most likely use cases to a wide range of technology options and potential 5G system architectures, and serves as an essential reference for academics and professionals involved in wireless and mobile communications. 5G cellular communications will be a game changer in the ICT industry and beyond, envisioned to enable pervasive connectivity between humans and things, and foster the so-called 4th industrial revolution as the next leap in industrial automation. While 5G research started several years ago, there is still the need for consensus in the industry and in standardization bodies on the exact architecture and functional design of the 5G system, before first commercial roll-outs can be expected in the 2020 timeframe. “5G Mobile and Wireless Communications Technology” provides the comprehensive, up-to-date overview needed to unite the industry in driving 5G’s evolution. The book is available at Cambridge University Press and on Kindle. In addition to co-editing and supporting most of the topics covered, Nokia Bell Labs provided the lead in these particular areas: device-to-device communications, edited by Zexian Li, interference and mobility management, led by Michal Maternia , and spectrum, handled by Mikko Uusitalo. Here’s what industry experts are saying about the book: Gerhard Fetweiss, Professor at Technische Universität Dresden: “So far cellular innovation has focused on driving data rates. With 5G, in addition we see the advent of low-latency Tactile Internet and massive IoT generating new opportunities for society. The first comprehensive view on 5G, based mainly on the EU METIS project, this book gives a great insight into challenges and solutions.” Narcís Cardona , Professor at Politècnica de València: “The first comprehensive text on 5G, essential to understand the enabling technologies that will make the future hyper-connected world a reality.” As one of the book’s editors, it was a privilege to work with Nokia Bell Labs contributors and other leading industry experts to arrive at a snapshot of the current state of 5G technology, its expected impact and opportunities. This snapshot includes key component technologies such as D2D, mm-wave communications, massive MIMO, coordinated multi-point, wireless network coding, interference management and spectrum issues. The significance of 5G for the automotive, building, energy, and manufacturing economic sectors is also addressed, as is the relationship between IoT, machine type communications, and cyber-physical systems.

"Nokia has been one of the most iconic and recognisable phone brands globally for decades, " said Arto Nummela, HMD's chief executive. "The excitement of re-introducing this much-loved, well-known and trusted brand to smartphone consumers is a responsibility and an ambition that everyone at HMD shares." The quick turnaround of the new phones, which will be unveiled in the first half of 2017, has prompted concerns after Samsung was forced to recall its Galaxy Note 7 device when it missed a fault during production. Responding to possible fears, Nummela said HMD "will not take any shortcuts". "We have amazing support from our technology and engineering partners who have provided a huge number of engineers to make this very quick, " he said. "We are focused on quality and reliability, and we will not take any shortcuts. Nokia as a brand owner is very keen that we maintain what has always been its trademark." The Nokia-branded phones, which will run Google's Android operating system, are being designed with reliability, simplicity and ease of use in mind, HMD said. Nummela added that the company is working with Google to "take the clutter away" and create a range of phones that are recognisable as Nokia ones.

China Mobile and Nuage Networks to build a highly-responsive solution that will scale to meet the needs of a massive deployment of approximately 2000 public cloud servers in the cities of Beijing and Guangzhou SDN solution will increase speed of deployments by ten times, while reducing operating expenses by up to 50% Espoo, Finland - Nuage Networks, the Nokia venture focused on software-defined networking (SDN) solutions, today announced that China Mobile (CMCC) has selected its Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) to implement CMCC's first commercial public cloud project based on SDN technology. China Mobile is the largest telecommunications company in China and has been rapidly expanding its large network of datacenters. CMCC needed a highly scalable SDN solution with rich services for a massive deployment of approximately 2000 public cloud servers in Beijing and Guangzhou. Nuage Networks VSP enables China Mobile to virtualize its multi-tenant datacenter networks and establish connectivity among computing resources while at the same time providing more features to customers. As a result, CMCC can implement new datacenters ten times faster than with physical deployments, and reduce operating expenses by up to 50%. This deal strengthens the relationship between China Mobile and Nuage Networks, building on the deployment last year of Nuage Networks SDN technology in CMCC's DevOps private cloud architecture. Nuage Networks VSP Solution Key Facts: Enables high-performance, high-stability distributed SDN and policy-based automation for cloud deployments Optimizes and scales datacenter connectivity Deployable on hybrid cloud and heterogeneous environments while operating seamlessly with open-source cloud management systems, hypervisors, and leading-edge software and hardware The datacenter and cloud networking framework of the VSP, Virtualized Cloud Services (VCS), automates the configuration, management and optimization of virtual networks, including security services that provide tenant isolation and access controls to individual applications and workloads A centralized policy manager and SDN controller automate configuration and tuning of network and security devices, accelerating IT tasks, increasing scale and reducing errors The VCS integrates with a broad range of open source reference architectures and management solutions to deliver virtual networking and automation in a highly scalable cloud environment Yu Xiaohan, Head of Customer Business Team, CMCC at Nokia Networks China said ''The successful track record of Nuage Networks' VSP in major operators' clouds around the world, and our philosophy of building open cloud environments that avoid customer lock-in, were both instrumental in our ability to win China Mobile's first open bid for its datacenter SDN. We are excited to assist China Mobile to build a large-scale, high-performance cloud that includes all of the features required to meet their customers' needs." Resources: Connect with Nokia: Nu-âhj: From French, meaning 'cloud'.

Android vs Symbian The entrance of the Android operating system into the smartphone market has ruffled more than a few feathers. Not just because it is backed by the Internet giant Google, but also because of the exuberant acceptance of many to the new platform. Compared to the industry giant Symbian, Android is very new with just a handful of handsets under its belt. Symbian roughly has 44% of the market while that of Android is about a tenth of that. But in terms of growth, Android far exceeds Symbian as the former has grown exponentially in just a couple of years while the latter has constantly been losing market share for quite a while now. Since Symbian has been around for quite some time, it was in use with ordinary phones back when smartphones are not yet very common. Â It was designed to work on phones that have typical keypads and QWERTY keyboards. On the other hand, Android was designed from the very beginning to work with touch capable devices and includes all the tools to take advantage of the GUI and the touch screen interface. Rather than navigating through multiple menus, many of Android’s features can be reached with a few taps on the screen. Although there have been updates to Symbian to add new features like touch functionality, its core has remained the same for quite some time now. The lack of major changes means that Symbian is quite outdated when it comes to new trends and technologies. Although the initial versions of Android was full of bugs and lacked many features, Google has maintained a brisk update schedule to address the issues. The latest version can now compete with other smartphone operating systems. The Symbian OS has almost become synonymous with Nokia mobile phones because it is used mostly on the aforementioned phones. Although there are a few manufacturers who use Symbian every now and then, the great bulk is still with Nokia. With Android there is no single phone manufacturer that clearly dominates the production of Android phones. The competition between manufacturers to produce the best Android phone is also one of the reasons why development maintains a very fast pace. Summary: Android is fairly new and has a smaller market share than the older Symbian Android is designed around touch capable devices while Symbian is designed around keypad devices Symbian is somewhat outdated while Android is constantly updated Android is used by many phone manufacturers while Symbian is almost exclusive to Nokia
